December Ramblings

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, December 13, 2015,
Time has really not been my friend this year. I have had so many projects that I've been excited about, but one thing after another held them back from getting published, be it a fugitive illustrator, or a decision to start a book over in a whole, entirely different style. Enough of that! 2016 Is going to be a year where you will here LOTS from me!!! In fact, if you look around my website, you will find a FREE short story, just in time for Christmas! You can download it as soon as I can get t...

Anthology

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, October 13, 2013,
I am excited and proud to be part of a project called the Northbound Writers Anthology. There are about 20 of us local authors, corralled by Professor Bob Comenole, who will be contributing our diverse writings to this book. We have sci fi, poetry, personal memoirs, war stories, historic fiction, flash fiction, and much more! I can't wait to tell you more about it, as it is coming together very quickly! It'll be available in time for the holidays. So, woo-hoo!

Details soon...

Announcement

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Saturday, April 27, 2013,
Dear Readers:

Usually, by this time of year, I'm happily planning ahead for all the authors fairs, craft fairs, library events and farmers markets that are abundant in the spring, summer and autumn months. Unfortunately, due to events and changes in my personal life, I probably will not be making many, if any, appearances this year. There's still a new book coming by year's end. I'll keep you informed of places you can buy it.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Graciously,
Holly Gaskin

Awesome time in Oswego!

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, October 28, 2012,
Had a great time at the River's End Book Store in Owego, NY yesterday. It was officially billed as "An Afternoon of Horror." This was a multi-author event, also attended by fellow authors Joseph Sweet, Nancy Henderson and a very interesting new acquaintance, Alycia Ripley. She'd just returned from a book tour in Australia. Now THERE'S something to aspire to! She was able to share lots of revelations about the publishing industry and the constant flow of changes in this digital age. Actually, ...

Spooky Time!

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Wednesday, October 3, 2012,
Well, October is here, and in keeping with my yearly tradition, my front lawn looks like a graveyard. The skeleton is hanging out of the wishing well.Spiderwebs, witches and ghosts adorn my porch windows.  I still need to get some pumpkins. It's looking very spooktacularly festive at the Gaskin residence!

Looking forward to the Appleumpkin Festival at Flower Memorial Library this Saturday. I've known about it for years, but this is the first year I'm able to take part. I'll be there, signing ...

I get to get out in the world and promote "Tricked" as though it were a new book! Yay! Please check out my "appearances" page to see where I will be.

Be well... I'll try to update more often.

New Places & Faces

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, August 12, 2012,
I've been having a fun summer of book signings so far! I have discovered the Philly Farmers Market, which is held on Saturdays from 9AM- 2PM in the Philly shopping plaza. It's a small but fun venue, with lots of fresh veggies, baked goods, wine and a food van! Henderson Heritage Day was a blast. I sold books and met with my "Too Many Kitties" artist. Plus, I think my husband may have won the juried arts show!

Well, back to Philly on 8/18, unless something comes up. I'm already trying to book ...

Too Many Kitties

I have completed writing my children's book, Too Many Kitties. I got the manuscript back fro Adirondack Editing and am in the process of making the suggested changes. I also found a talented artist to do the illustrations. Exciting stuff! I'll keep you all updated!

I was about a third of the way through writing the follow-up to Tricked, called Jinxed, when I realized there was a problem. It sucked. Starting over from scratch, at a time TBD.

Sandy Creek Rocked!

WOW... thanks to everyone at the Sandy Creek Library for making my first official speaking engagement such a fun and memorable event! Valerie, Elaine, Michelle, nice kids like Ali, Conner and Molly and EVERYONE who took time to talk to me, whether you bought a book or not! I loved the Halloween costumes and the great questions the audience had for me afterwards. Oh, and macaroni and cheese was to die for! A very well-organized event. Hope it becomes an annual event. October is here! My favorite month of the year. :^) I welcomed in the new month with "Barktoberfest" on 10/1, a fundraiser for the Jefferson County SPCA. I have a rare weekend off this Saturday and Sunday (unless I'm called to do a remote for the radio station). Perhaps my husband and I will take a drive to the Adirondacks to see the fall foliage. Lowville, NY

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Tuesday, September 13, 2011,
I had a very enjoyable time at the Lowville Free Library this past Saturday. It was fun hanging out with author friends like Marcus Mastin and Joseph Sweet and meeting new writers, like Dave Andalora. I also had fun chatting with Dawn from the library. I didn't realize who she was when I talked with her on the phone to book my appearance, but it turns out we have met before, via my job at the radio station. We have a friend in common. You know what they say about "six degrees of separa...

Clayton

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, September 4, 2011,
I had a great day in Clayton, NY yesterday at the 1,000 Islands museum. I was invited to participate in a book signing by April Ingerson, who's just a sweet and delightful lady! Besides myself, other authors in attendance were Louise Ford, Audrey Lashomb, Matt Turcotte and Skip Couch. (Rex Ennis unfortunately had to pull out of the event due to the death of a cousin.) People traffic was a little slow, but all of us managed to sell some books that day. I sold four copies of "Finding My Father"...

I am very excited to have TWO author appearances this week... First on Wednesday 8/10 at the Clayton Library and then the Summer Arts Festival, downtown Watertown on Saturday 8/13. Hope to see lots of old and new readers there!

I am having so much fun revisiting Patrick and Mariah as I begin writing the follow-up to "Tricked." Both the characters and myself, as an author, have grown so much since the first installment! I am pondering just the right title for it. "Cell" is already taken.. dang...

From Old Forge to Clayton...

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Saturday, July 30, 2011,
As always, it was great to get out to Old Forge for their annual Book Fair. There were about 15 other authors there, including Marcus J. Mastin and Nancy Lee Canfield. We were in a new location, under a big tent downtown, on the front lawn of a motel there. This worked out well for us. We got a lot of foot traffic, which was surprising for a Wednesday! It was a nice weather day, too, until a half hour before the event was scheduled to end. Then it started thundering and downpouring! Ah, well....

More Selling and Signing!

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Monday, July 25, 2011,
Saturday, July 23 was a fantastic day for me! I was part of the "Art in the Park" event at Rhodes Greenhouses in Henderson Harbor, NY. There were three other authors there (in addition to lots of crafters, artisans and live musicians. I especially was grateful to make a new author friend in Kate Winter, who writes about local history. She lives part-time in Albany and part-time in Hawaii, which was a blessing for Pete and I. For the second year in a row, I am taking part in National Novel Writing Month (www.NaNoWriMo.com). Last year, I failed to meet my goal of penning a 30,000 word novel in a month. It got to the point where I realized the ending was going to be too dark for the age group I was writing for. This all-too-brief, in-between period is nature at its most gorgeous. There's crazy-busy, when you're running yourself ragged and you're driving yourself into a hole in the ground in a seemingly fruitless effort just to keep up with the demands your schedule (or your own demanding mind) imposes on you.

Then there is good-busy, where your schedule may be jam-packed, but you are happy, exhilarated, even... doing what you love to do and making progress, even though you may be literally running all over the map! I much prefer good-busy to crazy-busy!

It's amazing what an "extra" day in the weekend can do for your creativity! Extra time to research, write, relax, etc. Found the journals I was missing in storage yesterday. This helped me get a lot more writing done, where, before there was blank pages and cloudy memories. It's amazing how much a healthy human brain can totally forget in one's own past. Makes the mystery of Alzheimer's all the more intriguing. I'll have to figure out how to post videos here so you can see what I mean!

I got some more information for my book, but there's still a lot more investigating to do. While it was great to see my Dad and spend time with him, his condition makes it difficult to get answers to my questions. Besides the Alzheimer's, my father seems to have other psychological issues. I am loving the new look of my website! I am learning a lot as I go... experimenting with this and that. I am really proud of myself for having learned the trick of building an email list. See my homepage to subscribe to my newsletter and receive a FREE short story. It's an exerpt from my upcoming ebook: "Finding My Father: A Search For the Truth in the Face of Alzheimer's." Still some finishing touches for this site in the works... Keep checking back!

TTYS,

Happy Weekend!

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Saturday, May 1, 2010,
I am happy to report that the writing of my new eBook is going well. I have lined up some great interviews with experts in the medical field. I am so lucky for their willingness to share their knowledge with me, free of charge! Actually, the hardest part is writing what I already know, because it involves a lot of uncomfortable memories from my childhood. But sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone in order to grow.

I'm taking advantage of the vast amounts of information on David R...

Still So excited!

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Thursday, April 22, 2010,
The thing with events like the Ultimate Success seminar, is when you come back to "real life," it can be a letdown. The "buzz" wears off after a couple of days, and you can feel depressed. Not so this time! In keeping in touch with some ofg the wonderful people I met... Aly & Andrea, Peggy McColl, Rich German, David Ricklan, Ken Brown, Dr. Deb, Alison Comrie... the positive vibes are still STRONG! It feels good to be following through and not just day-dreaming or wasting time planning. I'm wr...

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, April 18, 2010,
Back from the Ultimate Success Event in Ottawa. Unbelievable, overwhelming, educational... SO MUCH FUN!!!!! Peggy McColl actually recognized us and called us by our first names! The Book Launch party was Friday night. Magicians, singers, raffles, etc. Pete and I were too tired to stay for the comic hypnotist! LOL...

We got to meet some wonderful authors, life coaches, motivational speakers, authors & entrepenneurs; Rich German, Steve Shapiro, Ken Brown, Joyce Bone and Norm LaPalme, to name but...

A new adventure

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Monday, April 12, 2010,
My husband, Pete, had the good fortune to get through to Dov Baron's "The Accidental Guru" radio talk show the other day. He and Dov, a professional motivational speaker, author and "world leader in advanced personal excellence education," have struck up a friendship of sorts via the internet. Dov's guest that day was NY Times Best-selling author Peggy McColl. She writes how-to books on job success, attracting wealth, etc. She also is a professional mentor for authors.

Long story short, Pete ...

Working On....

Posted by Holly GFaskin on Wednesday, April 7, 2010,
Been working on a short fictional story called "Grandpa." Still toiling away on "The Hungry Monster." I really want to write more songs. I'm at a loss for inspiration/ subject matter. I would give my right pinky to be able to write a song as good as Miranda Lambert's "The House That Built Me." I'm really feeling That one. I sometimes feel like pieces of my soul are still lying somewhere in my Granparents' basement & attic. I want to go back and search for them...

Motivation

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, March 28, 2010,
I am coming to realize that I am practically anemic in the motivation department. I can write, write, write, but I can't get motivated to promote myself. I think I have a genuine phobia about writing query letters, making phone calls, networking, etc. I can't put my finger on it. I feel... intimidated and inferior, like "Why should this person give me the time of day? They're smart and successful and I'm not." I think I have more of a fear of success than of failure. If I get a "big break," t...

Fear

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Monday, March 22, 2010,
I always say that if you're afraid of the water, jump in. If you're afraid of fire, strike a match. The only way to conquer fears is to face them head-on. But I'm finding this is easier said than done. I'm forcing myself to practice what I preach, but my heart is lodged firmly in my throat this evening. I'll elaborate at a later date.

A review and my response

Posted by Holly GFaskin on Thursday, March 11, 2010,
I entered "A Little Company" in the 2009 Writers Digest Self-Published Book Awards. While I wasn't among the winners, I received a review from "Judge 1." I will share it and my thoughts here.

On a scale from 1 to 5, 5 being “excellent”….

Plot: 2

Grammar: 4

Character Development: 4

Cover Design: 3

What did you like about this book?

A Little Company is an interesting concept—a horror book set in the Grea...

Boston in May

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Monday, March 8, 2010,
I am so excited to be going to Boston in May! Pete and I will be spending our anniversary weekend there. We will be visiting my father, who I was recently reunited with after 30 years. Also, the city is rich with American history, and we didn't get to experience nearly enough of it when we last visited. Our first trip there inspired one short story, "Adolph," and I expect our return to Beantown will give me fodder for even more creativity!

In the works

Posted by Holly Gaskin on Sunday, March 7, 2010,
While I haven't entirely stopped work on "The Hungry Monster," I am seriously considering publishing an anthology of short stories first. I have many of these on file, and I'm currently writing two more. If I decide to go the short story collection route, I'd like to have it "out there" by summertime. Hmm... Who doesn't love a good Beach Book??? :^)
